Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)

Uterine fibroids can vary in size and grow on various parts of the uterus. They are benign tumors that can cause pain to women that can have a significant impact on their quality of life. The cause of them is not well known, but it is known that contributing factors include a history of fibroids, an early onset of puberty, and obesity. Symptoms of uterine fibroids include pain in the pelvic region, prolonged periods, and significant menstrual bleeding.

What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?

Uterine Fibroid Embolization, also known as UFE, is an alternative to a hysterectomy. It prevents new fibroid growth, treats existing fibroids, and preserves the uterus. The procedure consists of a physician that uses a fluoroscope which guides small particles to the uterus. These particles are injected through a catheter and provide blood flow to the area. This causes the fibroids to shrink, which can provide relief from the symptoms in nearly 90% of women who receive the procedure.

What are the symptoms of uterine fibroids?

The symptoms of uterine fibroids are an abnormally large abdomen, an enlarged uterus, long and heavy menstrual periods, severe cramps during menstruation, unusual bleeding, pelvic pain or discomfort, pain during intercourse, as well as other symptoms. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is recommended that you reach out to your doctor.
