How to Treat Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD)

Degenerative joint disease is the same as osteoarthritis. It is a form of arthritis that occurs because of the wearing of the joint. It can make it so that bones rub together. Symptoms of degenerative joint disease are joint stiffness, swollen joints, and pain.

There are some medications that can be prescribed that can help with the pain caused by degenerative joint disease. Other ways of treating degenerative joint disease are physical therapy, surgery, or other procedures.

One such procedure is Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE). GAE does not cure the degenerative joint disease but it can help reduce pain and reduce the use of pain killers for pain management. It is a minimally invasive procedure performed in an outpatient setting by an interventional radiologist.

The interventional radiologist used image guidance to guide a catheter into the blood vessels of the leg that supply blood to the affected joint. Then, the physician will release tiny micro sphere particles that will help in reducing the supply of blood to the joint. The reduction of blood to the joint can prevent pain that patients experience from degenerative joint disease.
